How to size your heater

Sizing a sauna heater is about room volume, not floor area. Here's the calculation.

Step 1: Calculate room volume

Multiply the interior length × width × height of your sauna room. For example, a 5 ft × 7 ft room with a 7 ft ceiling: 5 × 7 × 7 = 245 cu.ft.

Step 2: Adjust for glass and exterior walls

If your sauna has a glass door or glass wall section, add 10–15% to the calculated volume — glass loses more heat than cedar. The same applies if one or more walls are exterior (facing outside or an unheated space). For a 245 cu.ft room with a glass door: 245 × 1.15 = ~282 cu.ft effective volume.

Step 3: Match to heater size

  • 4 kW — rooms up to ~240 cu.ft. Compact basement saunas, small home banyas.
  • 6 kW — rooms up to ~340 cu.ft. Our most popular size — suits most standard 5×7 ft home saunas.
  • 8 kW — rooms up to ~440 cu.ft. Larger family saunas, rooms with extensive glass.
  • Dual 12 kW or 16 kW — rooms 600+ cu.ft. Commercial saunas, large family rooms, public installations.

Step 4: Check your electrical supply

Electric banya heaters require a dedicated 240V circuit — 30A for 4 kW and 6 kW, 40A for 8 kW. Dual configurations need two separate circuits. A licensed electrician can verify your panel capacity and run the dedicated line to your sauna location. We supply the wiring diagram and electrical specifications with every heater.

Heater FAQ

What makes a DreamSauna heater different from a standard electric sauna heater?

Two things: water-protected elements and stone capacity. Standard electric sauna heaters use exposed elements that can't handle water — they're dry-heat only. Our elements are sealed and protected, so you can pour water directly on the stones for authentic Russian banya steam. And we load 80–100 kg of peridotite stones in each heater, which store and release heat evenly — standard heaters often use just 20–30 kg of decorative stones that don't hold heat.

Can I really pour water on the stones?

Yes. That's the core of the banya experience. The water-protected elements are designed for this. Pour a ladle of water on the hot stones and the room fills with fine, soft steam ("par") within seconds. This is the difference between a dry sauna and a wet banya — and you can't do it with most electric heaters on the market.

Why peridotite stones?

Peridotite is a dense volcanic rock that withstands thermal shock — rapid temperature changes from water pouring — without cracking or exploding. Decorative sauna stones found in many stores are often river rocks or softer minerals that can crack under repeated water pouring, potentially damaging the heater. We source peridotite in the right size (5–10 cm) for optimal heat storage and steam generation.

How long does the heater last?

Our heaters are in service for 15–20+ years. The stainless steel body and stone compartment are structural and long-lasting. Heating elements are the wearable part — they typically last 8–12 years before needing replacement, depending on usage frequency. We stock replacement elements for all our heaters, and the swap takes about 30 minutes with basic tools.

Do I need a separate controller?

Yes — every heater requires an external controller. We offer digital and Wi-Fi controllers that mount on the wall outside the sauna. The controller manages temperature, timer, and safety cutoff. See our controller page for options.

What's the clearance requirement around the heater?

Maintain at least 4 inches (10 cm) between the heater body and any combustible surface. The cedar safety guard provides additional insulation. The heater should not be placed directly under a shelf or bench — leave at least 18 inches (45 cm) above the heater. Full clearance specifications ship with every unit.

Are these heaters CSA or UL certified?

All electrical components used in our heaters are certified (CSA/UL). The heater assembly itself is built to code with certified components. We provide documentation of component certifications with each shipment. For commercial installations requiring specific certifications, call us — we can provide what your inspector needs.
